I. Functions:
Past Simple can be used to:
Describe a completed action in the past:
Example: We watched a very intense football match last night.
She finished her study at university two years ago.
Describe actions that happened one after another in the past:
Example: Last night, someone broke into my house, stole a motorbike and damaged some furniture.
Describe a habit in the past:
Example: I went fishing twice every week when I was in the countryside.
We often flew a kite over the open field after a long day at school.
II. Form:
+ Affirmative:
Subject + V-ed/2
+ Negative:
Subject + did not + V-bare
Shortened form: did not = didn't
+ Question:
Did + Subject + V-bare
III. ed – how to add
+ Regular verbs ending with consonant + -y >> change -y to -ied
study > studied comply > complied apply > applied
hurry > hurried supply > supplied
+ Regular verbs with one syllable, ending in consonant-vowel-consonant (except from -w, -y, -x) >> double the last consonant + ed
hop > hopped chat > chatted
rub > rubbed mop > mopped
stop > stopped ban > banned

run > ran play > played
hit > hit fix > fixed
read > read bow > bowed
IV. ed – how to pronounce
+ Pronounce as /ɪd/: verbs ending with /t/, /d/
Example: wanted, devoted, decided
+ Pronounce as /t/: verbs ending with -se, -sh, -x, -ss, -k, -p, /f/, -ch, -ce
(Thần chú: Sáng sớm xuân sang Khánh phải fụ cha cày.
Example: based, washed, fixed, missed, booked, stopped, bluffed, watched, faced
laughed, coughed
+ Pronounce as /d/: others
Example: stamped, blended, stayed, founded, fooled,...
