Past Perfect can be used:

• · To describe an action that happened before another action in the past:

Example: We had finished our work before we returned home.

They moved away after they had sold the house.

By the time we got to the theater, the play had already started.

II. Form:

+ Affirmative:

Subject + had + V-ed/3

+ Negative:

Subject + had not + V-ed/3

Shortened form: had not = hadn't

+ Question:

Had + Subject + V-ed/3
